Charles A. Scanga, PhD
Research Associate Professor, Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics
Dr. Scanga is a Research Associate Professor in the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. He is also a member of the Center for Vaccine Research. Much of the work is carried out in the Regional Biocontainment Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Scanga’s research interest in HIV / M. tuberculosis coinfections. He has active projects using nonhuman primate models to study Mtb coinfection of children living with HIV, and to study vaccine regimens to protect people living with HIV from Mtb infections.
He is the manager of a BSL-3 PET/CT imaging facility and is an expert in using PET/CT to study infectious diseases including influenza and COVID-19. Dr. Scanga has over 60 scientific publications on viral, bacterial, and parasitic infections. His full biography can be found here:
